There are a lot of really good mics over $100 but less than $500 dollars. These include some great ribbon mics, large diaphragm condensers, small diaphragm condensers, etc. Each one gets you a unique sound.

Secondly, placement of the mics is as important as the mics themselves. I record a lot of guitar and my best recordings are where I use 5 mics to record the 2x12 guitar cab. I will close mic each of the speakers with an SM57 or similar dynamic, then put a ribbon or a condenser farther back from the cab. I will pan the close-mic tracks hard left and right and run the condenser right down the middle. Results in a really fat sound that cannot be emulated by 1 microphone.

Third, you don't need to spend $1500 on a compressor; there are lots of choices out there that do really quite good jobs. I have about 12 compressors and each one has its own character. I really like the Chameleon Labs 7720 on the stereo bus.

Fourth, mixing on an analogue console results in a better sound. I don't know exactly why, but when I got my first real mixer, my mixes immediately sounded better than my in-the-box stuff. Now I use an A&H GL2400. I would say if you are into hardware, the mixer is where you should consider spending your money.jhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04048345347158111824noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8417435048273274661.post-66909989295492016932013-11-28T09:02:24.646-08:002013-11-28T09:02:24.646-08:00Only if you'll be mine too!! :) Your recording...Only if you'll be mine too!! :) Your recordings sound phenomenal.Hortoniushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18123848023220596598noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8417435048273274661.post-9508260395271827342013-11-28T08:49:38.026-08:002013-11-28T08:49:38.026-08:00Very insightful!
